As food inflation continues to outpace headline inflation, the government and competition watchdog Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has resisted implementing measures to curb soaring food costs. While the weekly shop has become more costly, Australia has not faced food inflation as high as other countries where governments have intervened, threatening food suppliers with price controls, sanctions and divestments. However, the ACCC is keeping a close eye on the retail sector according to ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.
Cass-Gottlieb said Australia is better placed than other markets such as Canada and New Zealand because of changes made after the 2008 grocery inquiry which forced Coles and Woolworths to make unit pricing mandatory so consumers can easily compare prices, among other changes.
