American Cheese Output Surprisingly Declines

US cheese production increased 1.2% YOY in March according to the USDA, on an estimated 3.0% rise in manufacturing milk availability. American cheese output surprisingly fell 2.3% YOY for the month with a 2.0% decline for cheddar, while “other cheese” varieties (including mozzarella) increased 3.5% YOY.

Combined NDM and SMP output rose 10% YOY in March, reflecting a nearly equal increase for NDM and SMP. Butter production rose 1.2% YOY in March. Dry whey output rose 3.6% YOY for the month, but with a 6.1% YOY decline in WPC. WPC 50-89.9% output declined 3.9% YOY, while WPC 25-49.9% products fell 13.6% YOY. WPI production continued to surge, up 11.8% in March, but with a 24.3% YOY decline in MPC.
