continue talks with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic in Melbourne this week. The Australia-EU trade deal was abandoned in October 2023 after it failed to deliver meaningful access for agriculture.
Farmer organisation National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) and industry organisation Dairy Australia (DA) both welcome renewed talks. NFF urged the minister not to rush into a trade deal with too many strings attached.
According to DA estimates, accepting geographical indicator restrictions would cost the dairy industry $75m—$95m annually. Currently, the EU exports around 70,000t of dairy to Australia, with 1,500t imported into the EU from Australia.
