BoM declares La Niña

by | Nov 24, 2021 | Australia, Weather

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has declared a La Niña event with the wettest spring in 10 years set to continue into summer. Tropical weather and significant rainfall are expected across eastern, northern and central parts of Australia during summer with Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania most likely to be hit by heavy rainfall from now until January.

BoM’s head of operational climate service Dr Andrew Watkins the 65% higher chance that part of the county will experience more tropical cyclones were good news as it tends to reduce the risk of bushfire. The announcement of La Niña marks the first back-to-back event since 2011/12, however, the current La Niña is expected to be weaker than last year.
