Australian consumer sentiment has deteriorated again in June. The index declined to 80.6, the weakest reading since April and among the lowest in the survey’s 50-year history.

Cost‑of‑living pressures remain the dominant drag, overwhelming the brief relief from the temporary fuel excise cut. Sharp falls in  assessments of family finances, both compared to a year ago and over the next 12 months, reversed May’s improvement and signals that households are bracing for further financial strain. Other concerns are emerging, with a sharp fall in house price expectations due to recently announced tax changes while views on the broader economic outlook and major purchases are mixed.

Forward‑looking expectations are particularly bleak, with the sub‑index for future family finances dropping to one of its rare sub‑85 readings. Consumers appear under acute pressure and increasingly pessimistic about both current conditions and the year ahead.
