Cull cow values have bounced back in January, according to the National Livestock Reporting Service.
Saleyard prices for dairy cows averaged 232c per kg liveweight in the December quarter, down 5.5% from the prior three-month period. For the first three weeks of 2025, prices have been recorded between 250 – 265c per kg liveweight.
An increase in processing capacity 25,000 to 155,000 head per week is supportive of cattle prices, with Elders business intelligence analyst, the result of widespread investment in infrastructure and staff over the past 12 months. Its likely to take 2025 slaughterings into record territory if the cattle are available.
There are other ‘positives’ according to Koch such as the weaker Australian dollar, rising international beef prices and strong processing margins that are improving cattle prices.
