Victoria’s east coast was hit by a low last week bringing destructive winds and flooding across Gippsland, central Victoria and parts of the north-east. The Traralgon Creek catchment recorded more than 175mm rain overnight on Thursday and as result evacuation warnings were issued. Alerts were issued for major flooding on several rivers after Mount Baw Baw, Mount Tassie and the Thomson-Yarra Divide had more than 200mm of rain Wednesday night.
Power outages across Victoria’s south-east meant an estimated 200,000 people were without power with damaging winds causing widespread damage. Farmers in Gippsland were forced to move their herds to neighbouring farms with generators to keep the milk flowing.
