EU milk supplies remain tight

EU-27 milk supplies fell an estimated 0.4% YOY in March 2022. Declines in France (-1.2% YOY), Ireland (-3.3% YOY) and the Netherlands (-2.5% YOY) more than offset increases in Poland (+1.8% YOY), Italy (+2.9% YOY) and Denmark (+0.6% YOY). The estimate is based on 64% of average reported milk production, as major producing countries including Germany have still not published data. The Netherlands is the only other major producing country having reported April 2022 milk production data on Eurostat – supplies were down 2.6% YOY – the 17th consecutive contraction.

According to the most recent data, French milk production fell 2.1% YOY in week 17 this year (ending 30 April 2022), the 5th consecutive weekly contraction. German supply fell 2.5% YOY in week 17, the 49th consecutive weekly decline. AHDB reports UK production declined 1.7% YOY in the first 7 days of May after falling 2.2% YOY in April.
