Milk production declined 0.5% YOY in December according to the USDA. It followed a 0.4% YOY decline in November, which was revised from a 1% fall in the previous report. US milk solids output improved in December by an estimated 1.2% YOY above milk volume, mostly due to higher fat content.

National cow numbers fell by 9,000 head from November, the second successive monthly decline after peaking in October, which was less than a 0.1% YOY (or a 3,000 head) increase in the national herd. This time, USDA revised cow numbers down by 5,000 cows in November, and 4,000 cows in October. July dairy cow numbers were also lowered by 2,000 head. National dairy cow numbers were still up 34,000 head since August.

California output was down 6.8% YOY, mostly due to the impact of spreading avian influenza cases. This followed a 7.9% YOY decline in November, – revised from the 9.2% fall in the previous production report. Upper Midwest production was up 0.9% YOY, while output in Desert States increased 2.9% YOY. Texas has added 40,000 cows YOY, but with no growth month-on-month, and accordingly December milk output surged 7.5% YOY.
