Milk down 8.8% in May

Milk production fell 8.8% YOY in May, according to Dairy Australia. With just one month of reporting remaining for the season, the May result took year to date production 3.5% below the prior year comparative, and marked the 12th consecutive monthly YOY fall recorded in national milk production. While this is almost in the low part of the season, the monthly volume decline YOY was the worst in absolute terms for almost 3 years.

Milk production in Victoria was down 8.2% YOY for the month while season to date production is lagging 3.7% YOY. May production plummeted 11.8% YOY in Gippsland, with significant falls also recorded in the Northern Victoria (down 6.3% YOY) and Western Victoria (down 6.2% YOY). In NSW, milk collections fell 10.4% YOY for the month, but seasonal intake remains just 0.6% ahead of prior year. Tasmania recorded a 13.0% YOY drop in collections, taking season to date 7.5% behind the season before.
