Milk supplies remain tight

Our analysis of now complete Eurostat and AGEA (Italy) March 2022 raw milk collections data shows EU-27 supplies fell 0.9% YOY. The overall decline reflects weaker supplies in Germany (-1.4% YOY), France (-1.2% YOY), Ireland (-3.3% YOY), Italy (-0.9% YOY) and the Netherlands (-2.6% YOY) and despite positive trends in Denmark (+0.6% YOY), Poland (+1.1% YOY) and Austria (+4.2% YOY). The Netherlands is the only other major producing country having reported April 2022 milk production data on Eurostat – supplies were down 2.6% YOY – the 17th consecutive contraction. April milk output in Poland was still up 1.1% YOY, but that was the smallest expansion since December last year.

According to the most recent data, French milk production fell 1.7% YOY in week 19 this year (ending 14 May 2022), the 7th consecutive weekly contraction. German supply fell 2.1% YOY in week 19, the 21st consecutive weekly decline. AHDB reports UK production declined 1.9% YOY in the first 21 days of May after falling 2.2% YOY in April.
