Changes to minimum wages for temporary migrant workers from 1 July is hurting farmers who are already under financial pressure due to rising input costs according to lobby group Farmer Power. The minimum wage for temporary migrant workers rose from $53,000 to $70,000.
Farmer Power chief executive officer Garry Kerr said the wage increase will impact the bottom line for many businesses in Victoria’s southwest, who are already struggling with increasing overheads. According to Kerr a growing number of farmers are considering exiting the industry.
