The latest Bureau of Meteorology long-range forecast for December to February shows above average rainfall is likely for parts of eastern Australia and greater chance of warmer than usual days and nights.
Below average rainfall and warmer temperatures across parts of NSW, Victoria and Tasmania means that current soil moisture is below average for Tasmania and Victoria. In north-eastern NSW soils are wetter than average. With above average rainfall forecast for large parts of the eastern states, including eastern Tasmania. Low streamflows are forecast for most sites during November to January, with high streamflows expected in the north and east.
Ocean temperatures around Australia are forecast to be warmer than average from December to February. The El Niño Southern Oscillation is neutral and the Indian Ocean Dipole is currently tending toward negative.
