Saputo Dairy Australia intends to move its cream cheese operations to its Smithton plant in Tasmania with a $20m expansion underway. Frozen, natural cream cheese production is slated to commence at the Tasmanian plant in the spring of 2023, just in time for peak production in September to November. The move of cream cheese production is happening as Saputo closes its Maffra site in Victoria. Saputo president and CEO Lino Saputo Jr said the Maffra closure is a consequence of Australia’s shrinking milk pool.
