Following a weekend of unsettled conditions across New Zealand with heavy rainfall and strong winds, weather forecaster Weather Watch is warning of potential hail, thunderstorms, and tornadoes over the coming days. Part of Napier reported power outages Monday with heavy flooding which led to a state of emergency across the region. Heavy rain, hail and tornado-like funnels clouds were reported in the region.
Over the weekend, a low moving east across central New Zealand, brought strong winds and heavy rain to the eastern parts of the North Island, and heavy rain to North Canterbury in the South Island.
