US Domestic Cheese, Butter Demand Still Growing

Domestic commercial disappearance of cheese rose just 0.3% YOY in September 2024. The slight increase reflected a 1.6% YOY decline for American cheese varieties, and a 1.6% YOY increase in demand for other cheese types (including mozzarella). The fall in American cheese was on a relatively strong prior year comparable, with year-to-date and delivered a year-to-date disappearance of 2.7% YOY

Domestic commercial disappearance of butter was up 9.9% YOY for the month and was 3.9% higher for the year to September. NFDM demand declined 41.4% YOY in September alone and was down 31.6% over the last year, as lower demand from food manufacturers including chocolate makers responding  to high cocoa prices. Trends in domestic whey product commercial disappearance remained weak – dry whey declined 34.1% YOY while WPC was -13.6% YOY.
