US Milk Down 0.4% in April

US milk production fell 0.4% YOY in April, the 10th consecutive monthly decline. Per cow yield increased 0.4% YOY on average, however cow numbers were down 0.8% YOY. At 9.34m head, the herd lost 74,000 milking cows over the past 12 months, and there 8,000 head less than in March 2024.

Among the major producing states, Wisconsin milk production rose 2.5% YOY in March while Californian output was up 0.2%. April milk production  was up strongly in South Dakota and Florida while New Mexico was well down compared to the same month in 2023. Overall Upper Midwest supplies rose 1.9% YOY while Desert states were down 5.2% YOY.
