US milk production increased 3.2% YOY in August 2025 according to the USDA, following a notably revised 4.2% YOY increase in July.
The largest milk production gains for the month were in Idaho, Texas and Kansas, which combined for 46% of the national milk output growth for the month. California had a tough comparable (pre-HPAI) but finished August up 1.7% YOY. July output was revised up from +3.8% YOY in last month’s report to +5.9% YOY.
US milk solids rose an estimated 4% YOY, or 0.8% YOY above the increase in milk volume in August. Our estimate is based on the trend differentials between milk volumes and milk components and consideration of weather and margins.
The national dairy herd increased by 10,000 head in August and was up 176,000 head YOY (or +1.9%). USDA revised July cow numbers upwards by 25,000 head. The US dairy herd is now the largest since the mid-1990s.
