US milk production continues to improve, with national milk supplies rising 0.8% YOY in February according to the USDA. The overall increase was a result of a 0.4% YOY rise in both cow numbers and average yields per cow. At 9,417m, cow numbers were up by 12,000 head relative to the prior month and 37,000 head up YOY. This time, the government did not make any revisions in historical dairy herd data.
Among major producing states, February milk production in Wisconsin rose by 0.3% YOY and California was down 0.9% YOY. Milk production in Idaho, South Dakota, Texas, Iowa, New York, Michigan and Kansas continued to improve at impressive rates. Supplies continued to decline in New Mexico (-4.2% YOY) and Florida (-11.4% YOY). Output in Washington fell YOY in every month since May 2020, and was down 2.2% YOY in February.
