US: NFDM, butter output surges in August

Cheese production fell 2.1% YOY in August according to the USDA. American cheese output declined 1.3% YOY (with a 0.5% increase for cheddar) while “other cheese” (including mozzarella) dropped 2.7% YOY for the month.

Combined output of NFDM & SMP rose 5.4% YOY in August, reflecting an 8.8% YOY rise in NFDM production. SMP output declined and was 2% down YOY. Butter production continued to surge, rising 7.8% YOY in August.

Dry whey production was down 5.4% YOY for the month, reflecting lower cheese production and followed 12 consecutive monthly increases. August WPC production was down 1.7% YOY, with an equal decline for WPC 25-49.9 and WPC 50-89.9 products. Production of lactose rebounded in August – up 2.3% YOY, following a steady contraction in every month since November 2019. WPI production was patchy in recent months and rose 8.5% YOY in August.
