Virtual Fencing Given NSW Green Light

by | Oct 24, 2024 | Australia, News

A NSW Parliamentary committee has found virtual fencing  had a range of benefits for producers, including improved pasture and grazing management, cost savings, increased labour productivity and reduced work health and safety issues.

The Committee on Investment, Industry and Regional Development held hearings in July and received 56 submissions rom stakeholders. The final recommends the technology be legalised to bring NSW in line with other states, such as Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and Queensland. The committee also recommended the Department of Primary Industries develop a mandatory code of practice to support animal welfare and mitigate unintended consequences.

The technology is banned in Victoria. However, Agriculture Victoria and Halter are conducting trials at the Ellinbank Smartfarm. In July, Victorian Farmers Federation President Emma Germano described th trial as a forward step in making the technology accessible to Victorian farmers.
