Above average rainfall for the eastern parts of mainland Australia is on the radar, according to the latest long-range forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology. Most of western, far northern and far southeastern Australia rainfall is expected to be within regular seasonal range. The wetter outlook will be accompanied by warmer temperatures across the country. Both minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be unusually warm.
Rainfall was mixed in June for dairy regions; southwest and northern Victoria as well as Tasmania was drier than average while the state’s east was wetter than average. Soil moisture has been average to above average for most of the country in July, except for parts of southern Victora and Tasmania.
Ocean temperatures are likely to cool in coming months in the eastern tropical pacific, but remain closer to average near Australia. The Indian Ocean Dipole and the El Niño Southern Oscillation are currently neutral—meaning major impacts on rainfall or temperatures are unlikely.
